WORK has begun on the construction of the Hohola footbridge along Wards Road across the main bus stop area, in the national Capital District.

The bridge will be the first for the suburb, one among four that are to be constructed around the city in partnership with city districts and the city authority, and will be built at a cost of K2 million.

Partnering in the project K1 million was allocated by the city commission, K500,000 through the Provincial PSIP funds, along with the local MP for Moresby North-East, Michael Malabag’s DSIP contribution of K500,000.

When completed, the new footbridge will ease traffic congestion into the Hohola area, because of the main bus stop and it constant pedestrian movement to and from the various shops, market, and residential homes in and around the area.

Present to conduct the groundbreaking on Thursday, NCD Governor Powes Parkop said that footbridge, despite being nothing significant in other cities in the world, was important in the growing capital that has seen drastic growth in its population and the number of vehicles on the roads.

“Everyday we have over 300 vehicles coming into the city, with some then moving to other centers, which are vital in helping us commute and we cannot stop this as this is a growing city,” Governor Parkop said.

“In the next five years we could go past the 1 million population mark, and the city authority through the national government is trying its best to build new roads in the city, but we must not forget that we also must cater for our people who do not have vehicles.”

Other footbridge projects include the Koki footbridge, 4 Mile, and one at Waigani along the main road between the Vision City mall and the new City Hall building.
