NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has indicated an expansion in the CCTV (Closed-circuit television) initiative in the city, however, spoke of the need to have police support to fully utilize the system.

He said that the capacity of CCTV is good for the city authority and police to maintaining law and order in the city.

“We are continuing to roll it out and extend it to as many parts of the city as we can,” Governor Parkop said.

“The only problem we face now is the response, which is poor at this stage because the police have not come on board.”

“We cannot get G4S to go out and respond all the time because some of the incidents go beyond their capacity in terms of situations where firearms are used and serious grievance bodily harm which requires the police to come on board.”

He said that the police hierarchy still had not made a decision yet- with some seeing it in a negative light.

“I have already made the offer to the police that we can set up the same capacity for them where the signals be directed to the two bases of G4S and also to the police,” Parkop said.

“I think that is what they want and we are working on building that capacity so that hopefully they will come on board soon for us to have a quick response unit to back up the CCTV.”

“CCTV on its own is only useful for gathering information and helping prosecutions.”

“In controlling a situation like the stabbing of the policeman at Gordons- the death could have been prevented had we had the response unit from police.”

He said that with no police support in the new system, NCDC could not effectively utilize the benefits that the surveillance system brings.

“We do not have full police powers and don’t have their capacity- it is something that I will take up again with the police,” he concluded.
