OPPOSITION Leader Don Polye has called on all Papua New Guineans to focus more on family and be responsible in their spending in the New Year.

He urged all to be responsible not only in their conduct but to also contribute meaningfully in their own way to develop the country further in the year ahead in what he termed was a trying time also.

“Families must maintain their spending in terms of school fees- and advise fathers not to be irresponsible in terms of drinking and other habits that money is unnecessarily spent on,” Mr Polye said.

“Any money earned must be saved- mothers look at budgets and do not spend on more than what you need.”

“Children must not put too much pressure on your parents because the economic challenges ahead of us will not be easy.”

He claimed that the government might not even pay school fees, or vice versa not pay the teachers, urging families must be more responsible.

“On the people at large- I would like them to understand that the country is made up of you, 8 million people.”

“Think of what you as an individual can do to ensure that PNG survives shocks that come beyond our control.”

“What can you do to build Papua New Guinea’s economy? It is not so much of the government only doing things.”

He urged citizens to contribute hand in hand with the government and churches and not rely too much on them.

“If we only allow them to do those things for us- they will never fix all our problems,” he said.

“If we expect for some divine intervention to occur to save us, that will not happen as the creator is not stupid and has given us life and bodies, the brains, abilities and talents to put into use so that we must help ourselves to contribute to building this nation.”

“That is the kind of concept the belief, the conviction that I would like Papua New Guineans to develop in their hearts.”

“To grow a economy, a nation, a people, create an identity,” he concluded.
