CENTRAL Provincial Police Commander Laimo Asi made the appeal following a string of events regarding student behavior around the province’s schools.

He urged parents to take a proactive approach when it comes to monitoring the activities of their children in a society where bad influences are becoming more prevalent.

“What is happening around Rigo and Central Province as a whole in PNG in regard to issues affecting schools, as you have seen from the media coverage we have a lot of students getting involved in activities that parents do not expect,” Mr Asi said.

“One thing is that you do not know and control as a parent your children. You do not even check their bags when they return from school. You do not know what is in their bags.”

“You do not even check their phones- we have grade twos, even elementary we parents buy their phones and do not check to see what is contained in their mobile phones.”

He said results of such incompetence resulted in situations like the Mt Diamond case currently being dealt with.

He added that even at the Rigo village of Gabagaba a student went ahead and burnt a school classroom down.

“There are many schools with these issues because of the ignorance of parents. Or maybe it is that the children do not obey what instructions teachers give or what parents tell them to do,” the provincial police boss said.

“Basically what I am saying here is that we give them responsibility and we test how they respond. If we do not do that- we are allowing our children to be in due time infected with other children within the community and school they mingle around with.”

“I want to encourage parents especially to be responsible for your children. What your children do in more than one way demonstrates what kind of parent you.”
