The Guangdong Foreign Construction Company (GFCC), from China, officially handed over a feasibility study it conducted into the construction of a hydroelectric power station, at the request of the Enga Provincial Government, in Port Moresby last week.

Governor Peter Ipatas, emphasised the vital role the feasibility study had in the development of the province- in regards to projects such as the proposal to build the provincial hospital in Wabag.

“To have an efficient population we have to improve our alternate power source.”

“As the government of the Enga people, we have commissioned the Guandong Foreign Construction Company to conduct a feasibility study to identify a good source of hydro electricity generation.”

The study identified the Lai River, which is a few kilometres from Wabag Town, as a sufficient source to generate hydro power, to meet the new hospital and the rest of the province’s electric needs.

Senior Engineer, Zhao Guanghua, said through an interpreter, that the hydro project was a pre-condition to the hospital, because a good power source would enable it to operate efficiently.

“Enga is the last province to receive electricity in the country’s power grid supply, and the province has a lot of hydro potential.”

“How best to use this water resource is important for them, and according to our studies- we think a hydro power station built on the Lai River will generate six mega-watt of power,” he said.

Governor Ipatas, further stated that the study was carried at the cost of the company, pending approval from PNG Power- would be finalised for detailed designing.

According to the study, the station would have the potential to generate K10 million, in annual profits once built.

GFCC is an internationally recognised construction company, having had projects in Wabag, and abroad in Cambodia, Afganistan, West Pacific, and also West African countries.
