Asylum seekers resettlement, still in pipeline

PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has reaffirmed that the resettlement of asylum seekers in the country would be put through following stringent consultation processes before being carried out.

“We are still working through a legislative framework which the minister for foreign affairs and immigration is taking charge of that,” he said.

“Of course we need to consult as wide as possible in doing that once legislation is put in place with a proper policy guideline also."

He said that at no point would there be any resettlement taking place without- taking into consideration the complexities in various parts of the country.

“No resettlement will take place until all stakeholders are happy and give consent to it.”

“Many of the resettlement will take place in communities throughout the country where some people may not accept that kind of resettlement exercise.”

We accept that and that is why consultation is necessary.

He added that the Minister for Foreign Affairs and his team are working closely with all officials to ensure that the new frameworks are acceptable for all stakeholders.
