NCD Governor Powes Parkop has called on the Papua New Guinea Royal Constabulary (RPNGC) to come on board with the city authority to partner in the CCTV (Close Circuit Television) system launch last week.

He said that the system would greatly enhance the surveillance and response to crime for the police, and also free up police resources through effective and specific responses.

“Ultimately, it is my desire that the police should take this initiative on board, because at the end of the day I need the police to come on board- they should not give excuse,” he said.

“The security depends on intelligence and secondly the ability of police to turn up- any city needs security at that would be achieved through intelligence and the ability of police to turn up.”

“In this city the police don’t turn up so with this capacity we have developed we are giving them the capacity to ensure that turn up and catch the perpetrator.”

He said that it will send a clear message out there to those doing such activities that they are caught on camera they cannot get away with the crimes they commit.

“Right now people are getting away with it, and the police are not turning up,” Parkop said.
“I know they have a concern and I respect that, of not seen to be having a preference for any particular security firm in the city.”

“I need them to come on board and take ownership of the data and information and have a quick response unit.”
“I need them to turn up everybody needs them to turn up so that people don’t engage in such activities with impunity.”

He said that even murder was taking place in the open in areas like the Gordons bus stop area and Waigani also in front of both police stations where offender get away with their crimes.
