TWO provincial groups and students from the Solomon Islands at the University of Papua New Guinea can now put funding issues out of the way now to prepare for their annual provincial days and country day as NCDC continues its new annual funding support towards student groups at the university with K30,000 presented on Friday at city hall.

Provincial groups from Oro, Morobe, and international student contingent from the Solomon Islands were on hand to receive the funds of K10,000 to each group from NCD Governor Powes Parkop.

It follows the successful hosting of two other provincial days from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and the successful New Ireland Provincial Day held on Wednesday at the Murray Barracks- all funding through the initiative.

Governor Parkop said that all provincial group associations would receive similar funding to showcase their provincial culture as a new resolve made the city’s authority in 2014.

“This year we have made a decision to promote cultural celebrations in the city by UPNG students,” Governor Parkop said.

“The students have been doing themselves for a long time now in terms of raising funds to support their provincial showcase days.”

“We have supported gradually but now we are fully supporting their initiative with a total of K210,000 budgeted in this years budget.”

He said groups that were organized in hosting their provincial days would receive the funds and those who had made no moves to do so would be overlooked.

The governor said that the provincial days were now fast becoming a high point in the city’s recreational calendar and saw the assistance as a partnership between the commission and the students- for them to take ownership of the city.

He said that they hoped in the future a much wider collaboration could happen with groups from around the entire city, and reiterated the success of the recent New Ireland provincial group of the impact the funding is having the provincial days.

Presidents from the recipient group were all thankful to the governor and the commission for their assistance on behalf of both their members and their provincial communities at large.

Morobe’s provincial days will fall on August 9 at the Gerehu Secondary School; Oro will host their day on August 16 at the Coronation Primary School grounds; and the Solomon Islands student will add an international flavor to the celebrations with their day planned for August 3 at the Port Moresby Nature Park.
