AFTER five years of lighting up the Jack Pidik Park road corridor along the Sir Hubert Murray Highway- NCD Governor Powes Parkop has said that Christmas in the nation’s capital has never been the same.
With the click of a switch the capital city governor called on all residents to celebrate the festive season in the true spirit of the event on Monday night (November 29).

“It is Christmas time again and Port Moresby it is time again for us to put our capital city into the mood and spirit of Christmas for Next 21 days program,” Parkop said.

“We have done it in the last five years and we continue to do it again and this year as well. I do not need to remind you about the meaning and spirit of Christmas- we all know the gospel of Jesus Christ and we all know his main mission to come down on Earth.”

“This program that we have been carrying out is to support our churches, our Christian faith, our people about the significant values of our faith and we have done that successfully.”

He said in the past there were many resident may have forgotten the spirit of Christmas and the significance of Christ birth.

“This event in that respect has been a success, and I would like to thank all the churches in particular the Catholic Church in being with us over the last five years to bless the crib and be a part of the program.”

“Of course all the other churches have been part of the program in various way in choir singing and other areas as well.”

“This program is what we use to bring our community together in the city. All our different suburbs, different nationalities, different faith, and all our different linguistic and tribal groups.”

“We are a mini Papua New guinea reflecting the character of our country. So many tribes so many languages putting it together and sustaining it is no easy feat. It is hard to put a nation together like we have done, but we have been successful and our faith has been a part of that success.”

Governor Parkop added that mutual respect was key to creating a great city that would in turn create a great nation.

“We can have a city that our people can walk freely and go to markets freely, go to dances, go to church, go to school without fear and the threat of violence with a lot of respect and tolerance and support, and bringing our faith into reality.

The Christmas program has been put together by the National Capital District Commission with the support of corporate support Global and Hebou Construction, Paradise Beverages, and Vision City.

Celebrations will see other central areas as well apart from the Jack Pidik like the Ela Beach Amphitheatre and the Vision City Mall Amphitheatre as well.
