Papua New
Guinea Customs is committed to weeding out corrupt officers and brokers who
instigate illegal trade and practices- that was a key point highlighted by
Customs Commissioner, Ray Paul, last week in Port Moresby.
Speaking at
the Customs Brokers Conference, held at the Hideaway Hotel, he acknowledged
that customs authorities all over the world have been riddled with allegations
of corrupt practices.
Mr Paul
challenged all clients, members of the commission, and the brokers not to
tolerate such practices.
“As we speak-
there are people burning midnight oil thinking about how they will defraud the
State.”
“How many of
you have dobbed (reported) in fraudsters or scam artists- you may be a part of
it also,” he asked those present.
“If you, the
client, come across such individual please come and tell me.”
When asked
what the commission has done so far to address the issue of dishonest officials.
The commissioner emphasized the seriousness of the commission to come down hard
on its officers.
“A good
number of them have been identified to have facilitated trade that is wrong,
and we have committed one in court and another to stand trial.”
“Currently
our guys are in Lae to charge one or two officers,” he said.
He added
that the MoU signed by both parties also stipulates under section three- that
both parties will promptly report incidences of abuse of office by employees of
members of either party to the other.
