PNG Paradise High School held its, Sixth
Speech Contest on Friday, with Sogeri National High taking first place out of
the eight secondary and high schools who took part in Port Moresby.
Grade 12 student Pokup Kepiniu, collected the
K300 prize money. Second place went to Talytha Siraba of PNG Paradise and third
to Bolena Masere from Marianvile.
The contest among other events PNG Paradise
hosts is in its sixth year running- was organized by the school’s English
Department.
Its aim is to encourage students’ to think
and offer solutions to the problems of PNG and the world. The competition
invites all secondary and high schools in and around Port Moresby, including
Sogeri National High and Laloki High School.
Schools were allowed two speakers to choose a
local and an international issue to base their speech on. Contestants were
urged to do wide research on the topic they have chosen, express their feelings
freely in-line with proper language use and portray confidence.
A
total of eight schools took part in this year. They were Marianvile, Kilakila
Secondary, Sogeri, Port Moresby International, De la Selle, St Charles Luwanga,
St Josephs International, and the host school itself.
In his welcome speech, Paradise High
Principle Safak Deliismail, told a true story of the effect spoken words had in
the life of a girl who became successful in the United States.
“Just one sentence can really change people’s
lives, and now it is your (participants) turn to enlighten us with their
message,” he said.
De la Selle English Teacher, Maria Kenega,
hailed the contest initiative and the hosts.
“Contests such as this not only helped
students participate in discussion on pressing issues, but also motivates
students in their study of the English language” she added.
All participants were presented with a
certificate of participation.
