THE Jiwaka Provincial Administration will now have the
functions and responsibilities of theTraffic Registry and Provincial Land
Transport Board- after the signing of instruments by the Department of
Transport hierarchy last week, in Port
Moresby.
Three Instruments were signed by the Minister for
Transport, Ano Pala- appointing the Jiwaka Province Traffic Registry and
Traffic District; Chairman of the National Land Transport Board, Warren Wak
Temokang signed the Instrument for the functions and responsibilities to
establish the Provincial Land Transport Board; and Secretary of Department of
Transport signed as the Superintendent of Motor Traffic.
It was a milestone for the new province under the
leadership of the Governor, Dr Wlliam Tongamp and his government- showing that
they are serious and capable to provide land transport services close to the
people.
Jiwaka Province has progressed to another level of
development after attaining official
provincial status in 2012.
“The Organic Law on Provincial and Local Level
Governments, enables the delegation of this functions and responsibilities to
the provinces which empower Provinicial Administration to deliver services such
as the registrations of vehicles and road worthiness checks by provinces.”
“Consistently, Jiwaka Province has demonstrated its
aspirations by bringing the services close to the people thus people of Jiwaka
will now register their vehicles in Jiwaka Province (the provincial capital,
Banz) instead of going to Mt. Hagen,” said the Minister.
He added that department will support and assist were
possible the new province to administer effectively and effeciently in the new
functions and responsibilities.
The signing was to include the province of Hela,
however, they were not prepared in their preparation for the transfer of
resposibility to take place.
The Minister congratulated the Governor of Jiwaka and
Legal Officer Michael Kumi for taking the initiative and complimented the
province to be recognised together with the other 20 provinces in terms of
development and service delivery.
