THE
Office of Climate Change and Development (OCCD), was the proud recipient of
K15, 000, courtesy of the Steamships Group of Companies, at the OCCD head
office in Port Moresby, last week.
Steamships
donated the funds to assist OCCD with their preparations for the Open Day to be
hosted on August 16.
“Climate
Change as you all know is a pressing global issue. It threatens the core of our
very existence.”
“The
way we do business now will change in the future; the way we do our traditional
lifestyle our cultural obligations will off course change,” he said.
He
referred to a scientific article that was published in a journal this year, which
revealed that currently there are 400 parts carbon dioxide per one million
parts of air in the atmosphere, which is the first time it has happened in 3.5
million years, something that is very extreme and significant.
Peter
Popena, Group HSSE [Health Safety Security Environment] Manager) thanked the
OCCD for giving them the opportunity to partner with them in the very important
cause of Climate Change.
“As
you’ve heard climate change is real, so obviously we have to do something to
counteract that.”
“Steamships
have a sustainability strategy, and climate is an integral part of it as one of
the important pillars of the organisation,” he said.
They
measure their success to the sustainability strategy they have, and they have
key performance indicators that tell them whether they are in line with that
strategy.
“We
think of the best ways to work with Government agencies and NGOs to contribute
meaningfully to this worthy cause, and were very pleased to present the K15,000
cheque.”
