METROPOLITAN Commander Andy Bawa described the awards given to NCD police officers, last week in recognition of their hard work as something that was long overdue.

Policemen and women from the National Capital District Command were recipients of various awards and incentives in the first of its kind awards parade hosted and initiated by the Metropolitan Command under Metropolitan Superintendent.

Bawa said the concept was his command’s way instilling morale in the force to motivate his officers to be the best in what they do.

"Basically many hardworking policeman and women work tirelessly behind the scenes without any proper recognition."

"They deserve to be awarded to motivate them, and by giving them very good incentives as we have."

"As a command it is our responsibility to look after their welfare.”

He added that the awards will be an annual event, with the next one planned to be bigger and better, saying that for far too long the actions of a few officers have tarnished the name and hard work of the many.

"This initiative will also help change the mindset of those few rogue officers."

"Positive feedback of the awards concept was very pleasing, as we don't get that kind of recognition that often.

“This is one way to inspire my officers, and we have to start somewhere," Bawa said.

Reviewing officer and guest speaker, NCD Governor Powes Parkop praised the efforts of the command and said that morale in the force in the city had improved as a result of greater emphasis placed in the decipline and the modernization efforts the government was undertaking.

"I'm pleased to know that morale has improved, unlike in the past where fragmentation occurred."

"I take my hat off to you, as we have done well in bringing down crime in the city, however, petty crime still persists," Parkop told the officers.

Awards were given under 10 categories of: best public safety officer; best traffic officer; best prosecutor; best detective; best support unit officer; best community policing officer; best police station commander; best officer in charge; best support unit commander; most disciplined station in NCD.

Incentives included laptops, a washing machine, steroes, and other goods- to reward the officers for their tireless services for the last 12 months.

Met Supt Bawa, thanked the sponsors of the event, Brian Bell, City Apartments, Steamships, and GDA Company for their support in helping the police.

The parade was described by many members of the public as one of the best parade and well deserved for the recipients.
