REDUCE, Reuse, and Recycle, the 3Rs HEART initiative, was the theme for five deserving winners of the 3R heart logo competition in various categories, yesterday at the Lamana Hotel, in Port Moresby.

The competition, which ran since last year, called for a logo design for the 3R concept run by the Division of Waste Management of the National Capital District Commission in partnership with the Department of Environment and Conservation, National Planning, and JICA (Japanese International Cooperation Agency).

Under JICA’s JPRISM program, the 3R Heart Project, aims to reduce the volume of waste at the source, through the alternate use of waste items such as organic waste for compost, cans and pet bottles for recycling.

NCDC with the stakeholders of the project ran the logo competition for the project under the categories of elementary, lower primary, higher primary, lower secondary, with the major prize of a HP laptop computer going to the winner of the competition and logo designer, grade 12 student from Kilakila Secondary School, Momo Leka.

A total of 55 entries were received, with five chosen out of the total for prize incentives.

Acting Manager for the Waste Management Division, Joshua Sam, congratulated the winners for their entries and reminded them of the importance of managing waste in the city and country as a whole.

“Waste is a byproduct of our existence and we have to ask questions about how we live and what we consume and throw out,” he said.

“Consumption is a lifestyle behavior, and by having even a small logo competition such as this, we hope to get into the minds and hearts of people in our city.”

“And for the winning entrant- your logo will now be the face of the project for many years to come as we strive to practice the 3Rs in the city.”

Logo designer Momo Leka, said his design was based on the fact that three Rs were more or less a cycle in its self, which was the basis on which he based his design on.
