FOLLOWING the attack on NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation) staff on Monday night- senior television journalist, commentator, and consultant to Kundu2 television station John Eggins has called on staff at the national broadcaster and the mainstream media fraternity to be mindful of their safety.
While condemning the attack, the veteran journalist reminded the media and staff present at the sit-in protest to be mindful of the nature of their job, which placed them in the public arena.
“We are in an industry that is very public in nature, where people either like us or hate us,” Eggins said.
“We have to develop a culture of safety where we have to take account of where we are and our surroundings.”
“Gone are the days in the past where the people hear and not react- today whatever we report is scrutinized by the average person in society.”
He referred to recent measures that media outlets like EMTV and Post have undertaken to remove company signage of their news vehicles to keep up with the changing times.
“You will notice that EMTV and the Post (Courier) don’t have signage on their vehicles- TV crews must watch over each other,” he added.
“This event has been a eye opener- I am seeing this evolving issue that continues and it is not the first, nor will it be the last.”
