THE National Government has reassured its support through the Ministry of Sport to assist West New Britain province host a successful 2016 PNG Games.

Responding to concerns raised by West New Britain Province Governor Sasindran Muthuvel on the issue of sporting infrastructure in the province in Parliament on Thursday, Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko reassured the Governor that the government along with the Sporting bodies in the country would assist the 2016 host.

“I know that the governor for east new Britain is keen to improve his facilities in WNB and I want to assure the governor that as Sports Minister and through the Sorts Foundation and the PNG Games Authority we will back you up and support you to ensure that you will have a successful game in 2016,” Minister Tkatchenko said.

“I know that you are going to be putting a lot of budgetary support over the next couple of years and I look forward to backing you on that and supporting you with your plans to ensure facilities ready.”

Tkatchenko also thanked the organizers of this year’s games in Lae, Morobe and all governors for supporting their provincial teams- raising the issue that there needed to be mechanisms in place to ensure effective preparation time and facilities were maintained and improved for future games.

“On this avenue we need to look at how we can successfully operate the PNG games in terms of the funding and operation of all provinces that get to the games without fear or favor,” the Minister added.

“One option we are looking at is to get the games instead of every two years every three years.”

“It will allow organizing committees of the provinces so that the host to have enough time to organize this very important event of sports in our country, and also the other option of hosting it in those provinces who can actually facilitate and host the game with the facilities they have.”
