IN its bid to promote and encourage responsible drinking amongst its customer base- South Pacific Brewery organized a two day workshop on ‘Training for Intervention Procedures’ (TIPs), at the Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby last week.

Participants were from major SP customers from the hospitality and retail industry, with over 10 qualified as trainers of the TIPs program.

The highly regarded TIPs program was run through US firm, Health Communications Incorporated- with it President and CEO Adam Chafetz on hand to oversee the training program.

Chafetz said that the two day workshop enables participants to teach in their various organizations once they are classed as certified trainers after undergoing the three part training program.

“It involves information about how alcohol affects people, information about strategies they can use to diffuse situations and a skills training portion also,” Chafetz said.

“The second half is for the servers dealing with those situations, we evaluate whether they did a good job with that situation, an ok job, or a really bad job- they get to argue and discuss situation.”

“The last part of the program is called the practice and rehersal where they actually get up and act out situations which they feel have not been covered or they think will be difficult to solve.”

He said that when trained as trainers and they will go back to their establishments and communities and offer the training to different people.

“It is going to be a little hard at first as it was in the United States, but it is going to help establishments say that they want to change the culture,” he said.

“We really need to start changing people’s attitudes- we encourage the servers to share what they have learnt with their patrons so they are aware, and some of the patrons even step in when servers refuse more drinks to intoxicated patron and that creates a responsible communal environment.”

SP Corporate Affairs Manager, Reg Monagi, said that the program is part of SP’s Corporate Responsibility Program to advocate responsible consumption.

“We have organized this with our customers to train these people so they can in turn train their bar attendant and bottle shop attendants,” Mr Monagi said.

“It is important for our consumers to understand that when you are going to an establishment for a drink, you must drink responsibly.”

“People have to be aware when it comes to talking about alcohol issues, and there are also relevant sections of the law that specify the use of alcohol, however, enforcement is an issue.”

He added that Health Communication Inc is based in the US through the Heineken company has conducted a number of training in the Asia region with SP sister brewing companies under the Heineken Brand.

“We as part of the Heineken group took the opportunity to get Adam to come to PNG for us to work together with our customers on alcohol consumption, through the use of a high profile training program that is recognized all over the world,” Monagi said.
