NCD Governor appealed to the regional and wider international community, especially those coming to the Pacific Games within the region, that the standoff incident that occurred last week was an isolated one that was not premeditated or organized.
He said that the incident was a spontaneous incident that occurred out of a drunken situation.
“We are ashamed and regret that it has happened, but I want to assure everyone as the governor of our city, the host of pacific games and 2018 APEC leaders summit, that we are doing all we can to overcome and go beyond this incident,” the governor said.
“The city will be ready to host the pacific games- I am confident and would like to assure all the countries in the Pacific that they can send their athletes and they will be safe.”
“In terms of our culture, when we have conflict it is against ourselves and we don’t take it out against our guests or other people.”
He said that the issue was internal and would be resolved in terms of the safety and security of athletes.
“They can be assured that no harm, ill will, or injury will come to them, with the highest security for them to ensure that they come and compete to the highest standard to make their families and people proud.”
Governor Parkop also announced plans to have host villages in both the capital and the Central province to act as satellite home venues for visiting athletes.
“The people of Port Moresby are all geared up to welcome them and host them, and cheer for them- we are hosting it in a way that each of the villages in the city and central province will adopt countries that are coming from the Pacific and will be supporting for them,” he said.
“They can host them for some feast or some dancing, church service- it is up to them.”
“For 2018 APEC it is a long way, and we will overcome this incident. Many countries in the world always have these kinds of regrettable events but they always rise above it and build for a better tomorrow.”
