AVID internet user in the nation’s capital in Port Moresby will now be the first to have opportunity to surf with greater speeds thanks to the introduction of 4th Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network, last week at the Royal Papua Yacht Club.

With the first 10 4G sites switched already operational- various corporate entities were treated to live demonstrations conducted and product displays that run the wireless format.

Digicel PNG CEO John Mangos spoke of the mobile communications provider’s aim to push the boundaries of their product line in bringing the best and latest to the country’s marketplace.

“It has been seven years now since we started and here we now have 4G,” he said.

“We have two aims in this country- the first being to provide full geographic coverage, as we believe that there are two million people out there still to be reached.”

“We want to bring in the latest technologies that are available in developed countries in the world.”

The second aim being to bring service right across the country- through our commitment to the government by increasing our current coverage from 75 percent to over 90 percent.

He said that the 4G platform was all about speed for their customers- sighting the issue of black spots in its coverage at the beginning, but assuring its rollout to spread in the two main cities of Lae and Port Moresby and eventually be available to prepaid formats for 4G compatible handsets.

When tested, the format reaches speeds from between 15 megabytes per second on fully engaged (a lot of users connected) router devices to over 30 megabytes per second speeds using the specialized sim card.

Greatly reducing problems associated with page loading and buffering issues for streaming live videos, and music.

Launched alongside the new service, were the compatible devices that will enable any Wifi enabled device to receive the new speed through Mifi units, and Routers that are available at selected Digicel outlets.

Smart phones compatible to use the speed format via the new LTE sim include Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 mobile phones.
