PNG Power has come on board to support the National Capital District Nurses Association with K4,000 to assist them in their preparations to attend the PNG Nurses Symposium in Mendi Town, Southern Highlands Province, from November 4 – 8, yesterday at the NCD Health Services Office at Gordons, Port Moresby.

With indications of more support in the future, the country’s only electricity provider, through their Team Leader of Health Services Dii Kamiso, emphasized the importance of heath as one of their main corporate responsibilities.

“Unfortunately people only look at us as only a provider of electricity, but our vision is to provide that electricity in a safe and healthy environment.”

“Being a state entity we have a corporate responsibility to give back to the community, and we are to launch a program to make awareness on lifestyle diseases which affect our people”

“This K4,000 we are assisting you with is not the end of our partnership as we will still assist in the future,” he said.

Director for Curative Health Services at NCD Health, Dr Jerry Tanumei, thanked PNG Power for their assistance as partners in the health sector- saying that involvement of partners is very important in the National Health Plan, which refers to the partnership of stakeholders who work with the health department to assist in ways to encourage good health.

“The important category of health workers is the nursing category, which is very essential to the delivery of health services.”

“About 90% of the health workforce in the government consists of nurses; because of their efforts in their work the department gets recognition in terms of health service delivery.”

“One of the important activities that is part of the National health plan is the ongoing development of the manpower which is through formal phases like educational courses, informally short course for a few weeks, and conferences like the one our nurses are to attend,” he said.

He said PNG Power represented that in their willingness to contribute to the advancement of the knowledge and skills and empowerment of the nursing profession.

The National Capital District Nurses Association will send a total of 13 nurses and a Doctor to the symposium.
