NCD Governor Powes Parkop
made the call during his keynote address at last week's NCD Police Metropolitan
Command Awards parade to award selected officers who had served the command
with distinction during the year.
The governor referred to the
assumption of many in the public service to expect awards and increments as
right and not as one that should be earned.
"In our public service
in the country, some of the incentives like annual increments are being sought
after to a point where they see it as compulsory."
"It is not right that
members of the public receive increment as a matter of right."
"It should be something
that you work hard for, so if you perform well you get an increment," he
said.
He called on the police not
to be a part of what he term as a "rubbish culture"- emphasizing that
performance to deliver what was required by them was the way to lift the
standard way the police was seen in the city and the county.
Parkop called on the officers
to improve in their performances in order to be considered the best in their
various fields.
"Many of you have not
received anything, and its now time for you to step up."
"I as your governor and
my colleagues are ready to discuss how we can assist you with the Metropolitan
Superintendent, the divisional commander on how we can continue to assist stage
the awards in the future."
