USA opened an advising centre at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) to
gives students the opportunity to have access to firsthand advice on prospects
to studying in the United States, last week at the main Waigani Campus.
The opening
of the centre follows the signing of an MoU last month to establish the centre.
It aims to
provide accurate, comprehensive, current, and unbiased information in the form
of information sessions, reference guides on standardized entry tests, and
internet access to research institutions and scholarships.
US Embassy Public
Affairs Officer Natalia Carpel said that the centre was vital as a guide to
enable students with prospect to study in the US to navigate the various
processes needed in order to achieve the goal.
“With more
than 4,000 universities, the tertiary system in the US is flexible, but only if
you attend an accredited institution which allows for that flexibility,” she
said.
“This is
why the centre has been established to provide the guidance and factual
information- taking students through the five basic steps to studying in the US
either through paid study or scholarships.”
Students
both on orientation and continuing flocked to the centre on the opening day to
see what was on offer.
Final year
Banking and Finance undergrad Samuel Imare said that the establishment of the
centre would help guide students like him trying to further their education
overseas, highlighting some of the main hindrance to this being finance and the
lack of proper credible information.
“The centre
will enable windows to be opened to us who have dreamed to study overseas,
especially in the US.”
“It will
also guide us to what kind of scholarship opportunities provided by
universities out there.”
All
services provided at the centre are free of charge and are opened to both
students at UPNG and members of the public, located in the Student Services
building.
