WITH the outbreak of measles, the number of confirmed cases throughout the National Capital District (NCD) has now been set 57 in total, with the Central Province reporting two confirmed cases as of Monday.

Of the two confirmed cases in the Central Provinces, one was from Gaire Village along the Magi Highway, and the other at Doa Platation along the Hiritano Highway.

The vaccination campaign in the nation’s capital schools and confirmed cases areas has seen over 130,000 children and young adult from ages 6 months to just under 20 years been vaccinated so far.

Director of Public Heath for NCD Health Services, Dr Niko Wuatai, said that they were hoping to complete all schools in the city by today.

“For those schools we missed out unintentionally, I would ask if they could call our office on 325 4226, so that we can organise a visit to immunise students,” he said.

“The next move we will be taking after all the schools is to have mobile immunising stations set up around the city in public areas like markets, shop fronts, and settlements.”

He highlighted that with the campaign set to end on April 4, parents must bring their children to any of the 20 clinics and mobile stations around the city, if they have not received the immunisation yet.

Dr Wuatai also informed Midweek Chronicle that all confirmed cases have been treated at both the Port Moresby General Hospital and the St Johns Hospital at Gerehu- with all set to recover mainly from the complications like pneumonia and other illness as a result of the disease.

He also thanked Medical Frontiers and World Vision for their assistance in providing two vehicles for the campaign.

“I would like to thank our staff for the tremendous efforts they have put in to vaccinate a lot of the children.”

“Also a big thanks to the Department of Health, namely Surveillance Manager Barry Ropa, and Jerod Sui, and Dr Datta from the World Health Organisation,” Wuatai added.
