THE
Supa V Stoa program made more headway last week, when it graduated selected
operators and their assistants in the programs Operators’ Course conducted for
a week at the SVS Harbour side Supermarket in Port Moresby.
A
total eight operator and their assistants were part of the third batch to
receive their certification on how to effectively operate their stores, which
was the last steps before the delivery, and eventual opening of their
respective stores.
The
Supa V Stoa concept has been an ongoing initiative between the Super Value
Store Group and the National Capital District Commission, under the Governor of
NCDC Powes Parkop- to assist the
Motu Koita people of the nation’s capital to
venture into business opportunities.
With
the target of 17 shops for the city’s indigenous villages almost being
fulfilled, the success of the initiative has now seen it moving out into the
Central Province, with half of the third graduating batch from outside of NCD,
and a lone participant from Lae, Morobe Province.
Project
Manager Franklin Salazar explained that participants undertook computer
training, and electronic platform training, and operating steps in running
their shops.
“We
conducted classroom training, and hands on training with BSP and Digicel, and
we visit the actual stores so that they have a feel of the actual environment
they will be working in,” he said.
“We
also discuss some of the opening guidelines so that they know some of the
expectations that are there before we open the store.”
In
congratulating and presenting their certificates, NCD Governor Powes Parkop
challenged the participants to be committed to the arrangement- urging them not
to be job seekers but to create them.
“Many
of you here are from Central Province and are private partners in the scheme
and I am happy to be here to officiate in this ceremony,” he said.
“This
scheme is an ambitious plan between SVS and other partners and when this
initiative began we were one of the first organizations to put our hands up to
be a part of it.”
“Since
rolling it out in the city- we have almost completed 17 of the participating
Motu Koita operators around various villages, in and around the city.
“This
scheme is ambitious on our part to try and get them to develop skills in
business and entrepreneurship and generate income.”
He
told them that his dream for the project was for them do be successful business
man and women for not only themselves but for the nation.
“My
personal plan of the whole concept is that by three to four years’ time I want you
all to become millionaires- why not.”
“It
is possible if you stick to the plan and you do not move out, and discipline
yourself.”
“I
want you all to share this dream, for not only you and your family but for our
nation as a whole.”
In
closing the ceremony, Project Manager, Patricia Kassman revealed that other
citizens and suburbs in the city would be targeted soon under the scheme.
“I
would like to clarification to the rest of our city residents that even through
the initiative is targeting our Motu Koita people- the governor has just
mentioned that we will roll out for the rest of the city, when he is ready.”
“So
the rest of our residents out there, don’t be disheartened- your time will
come.”
She
acknowledged their partners and
suppliers like Bank South Pacific, Digicel, Coca Cola, Ox & Palm, Trukai,
Colgate- the suppliers that have partnered in the project.
With
over 13 shops rolled out so far, Lae city is next to roll out the scheme, with
plans for the concept to roll out over 3,000 stores countrywide when completed.
