Transport
Secretary Roy Mumu said that progress on the establishment of the new Road
Traffic Authority (RTA) was ongoing; with the consultation phase underway with
a forum held last week at the Crown Plaza Hotel, in Port Moresby.
Secretary
Mumu said that the draft bill has been set in place now for agency comments till
October 4.
He referred
to the consultation process being a mammoth task but vital none the less to be
carried out around the country.
“The whole
idea basically is to combine the current functions, of the Land Transport
Division, the National Road Safety Council, and the Land Transport Board.”
“So all
associated activities like vehicle registration, driver licensing, taxi or PMV
licensing, will be done under one organization,” he said.
Once
established, registration of vehicles can be done anywhere in PNG under the new
RTA.
“The
authority will operate a database to store and check all relevant detail, so we
avoid all the abuse in the sector at the moment,” Mumu added.
