A HIGHLIGHT of the Melanesian Festival Arts and Culture was
that of the general safety and discipline conduct of the crowds that visited
festival venues in Port Moresby.
Most of the praise and surprise came from the men and women
in blue that provided security in the duration of the festivities.
Speaking on behalf of the men and women of the police who
took part in security operations Chief Superintendent Kabib Lamu who said his
men and women were surprised at how disciplined and well behave city residents
were.
“We discovered that the people were very receptive and it
was special because it was something to do with cultural unity, and we thank
and salute everyone that took part,” Chief Superintendent Lamu said.
“I commend all provincial commanders in the involved
satellite venue provinces; despite the short time we had to prepare we achieved
our goal of a safe festival.”
“As a long serving officer, it was an eye opener as to why
we had such a unique event- from almost all past experience of events of such
magnitude there have been problems.”
He pointed out that even the night activities at the Jack
Pidik Park at 5 Mile, which had a history of petty crimes, were some of the
safest with members of the community assisting police to organize the parking
and crowd control long before officers arrived to provide security.
Lamu added that with the success of the police operations
the calls for a tourism police concept was now an option for future upcoming
events.
