THE
National Capital District Commission under the leadership of NCD Governor Powes
Parkop recognized the contribution of student provincial groups from the
University of PNG, in hosting annual provincial days to promote cultural diversity
and unity in Port Moresby.
He affirmed
the Commission’s support with a cheque presentation of K10,000 for the
Bougainville Provincial day hosted yesterday at the Gordon Secondary School
grounds.
Along with
the presentation, Governor Parkop announced that similar assistance would be
awarded to other provincial groups from the university.
“As the
capital city of the country, we want to encourage the portrayal of cultural
identity and encourage the blending of our many cultures,” Parkop said.
“Just as we
say one nation, one country- we all have to live by it and the nation’s capital
is a representation of that statement as every tribe and language is
represented here.”
“We have to
promote diversity, and I want to thank the students for keeping our culture
alive.”
Parkop
reminded the various provincial group presidents that Port Moresby had come a
long way from the days from being a liability to the country to where is today.
“Despite
your origins, many of you only carry your provincial names but your lives have
evolved around this city,” the governor said.
He also
extended the financial assistance to international students from the Solomon
Islands.
Vice
President of the Student Representative Council, Salome Delabu thanks the
governor and NCDC for their support- describing the relationship between both
parties as partners in promoting culture and entertainment for the city’s
residents.
