WORKING in partnership was the word of the day when Member for Moresby South and Minister for Sports Justin Tkatchenko and NCD Governor Powes Parkop teamed up last week to launch the reconstruction of Pari Primary School located on the outskirts of Port Moresby.

Located in the Motuan village of Pari- the school was established in the 1960s and has been neglected to a state of being rundown.

Following a visit from it local MP and a recent suspension of classes following the condemning of the school’s toilets by health authorities- the whole school will now be rebuilt at a cost of K1.2 million courtesy of shared allocations from both MPs.

“Today is the start of a brand new day for Pari Primary School, and I want to make it very clear that the work that I do is a partnership with your governor Powes Parkop and with you the community,” Tkatchenko said.

“History is history we cannot change it, though we can look forward to the future of a brand new Pari Primary school for the benefit of you, your families and the whole community.”

“I drove past the school three months ago and dropped in unannounced and walked through all the facilities while you were all in classes.”

“I was absolutely disgusted in the way you are being treated as children. This is not on in a modern day society, and the way the facilities are is a disgrace.”

He thanked NCDC for support and confidence in ensuring the job was done.

“All 14 classrooms will be completely renovated, both outside and inside, as you know all classrooms are infested with termites,” the MP said.

“By the time we finish at the end of the year you will have fourteen brand new classrooms fully kitted out for you to go to school with.”

“As a requirement you will have a brand new toilet system which will just be like a hotel, and we will also landscape the area with proper garden beds, proper assembly area.”

In his capacity as the sports minister, Mr Tkatchenko also announced the building of sporting areas for basketball, volleyball, and netball through the sports enhancement program.

The construction is aimed to be completed before the end of the year so as not to interrupt the 2015 academic year.
