WITH
327 days to go before the start of what is expected to be the biggest Pacific
Games in history- Minister for Sports and Pacific Games Justin Tkatchenko has
confirmed that the 2015 games will be officially opened by a member of the
British royal family.
While
attending the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the
minister was granted an audience with the Queen of the Commonwealth, Elizabeth
II and members of the royal family.
“I
was very privileged to meet the queen of Papua New Guinea her majesty Queen
Elizabeth II and spoke to her briefly at the opening ceremony of the
Commonwealth Games.”
“I
also had lunch and a meeting with Prince Charles in Glazgow, as well as met
with Prince Edward the Duke of Gloster and other royal family members.”
He
said that is was a great honor and privilege due to the fact that they all attended
the sporting event.
“For
a member of the royal family to come to Papua New Guinea to attend the Pacific
Games- they are going to make a decision in the next couple of weeks but they
have confirmed that a royal family member will be attending like they did in
1991,” Tkatchenko said.
“Prince
Charles was very pleased and reiterated to me how pleased he was on his last
visit to the country in 2012, and he loves our country so we look forward to a
royal family member coming to officially open the Pacific Games in 2015."
Minister
Tkatchenko added that an official announcement would be made once he receives
word from Buckingham Palace.
