SOUTH Pacific Brewery launched what has been hailed as one of the first of its kind workplace policy to assist employees deal with alcohol related issues and the promotion of responsible drinking.

The brewer in taking a lead and proactive approach to the issue which it hopes would be taken up by other companies and organization to assist employees.

As part of the Heineken Group the policy launch will coincide with International Enjoy Responsibly Day this Thursday.

SP Managing Director Stan Joyce emphasized that the project was one that the company was serious about for the sake of its 457 employees.

“I want to mention our support options for any SP employee who may be struggling with their alcohol consumption,” Mr Joyce said.

“If you think that you may be dependent on alcohol, or if you are unable to control your consumption and this is causing you problems in you personal life or in your professional life, you must know that you will have the company’s full support and encouragement to seek help.”

“Seeking help will not affect your employment- you will not have to fear losing your job.”

He said that there were other campaigns in the past undertaken to address the issue, however, the cool at work policy was taking the issue head-on through a different approach.

“I am happy to announce that we will be making available counseling to our employees who think they have a problem,” he said.

“Counseling not only about your drinking problem but the problems that have arisen in relation to this- we now have a qualified counselor here.”

Joyce also raised concerns of staff drinking on company premise which he said was dangerous and attributed to issues associated with drinking problems as a brewer of alcohol.

“We must be careful of what our role and image we portray to the rest of the community- together we have to tap each other on the shoulder in a friendly reminder of the accepted standards we must practice to respect each other,” he said.

This week will see staff from the brewery conduct awareness on responsible drinking at various clubs and shops in celebration of international enjoy responsibly day.
