THE appointment of Dame Meg Taylor to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat as its new Secretary General has been hailed by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill as a win for women in the region.

He added that it was the first time in both the origination’s history and that of the country for a woman to hold a lead role in an international organization.

The PM also gave special thanks to the member countries for their support and confidence in the appointment of a well respected and experience Papua New Guinean.

“We want to thank all the pacific Island countries and their leaders for the confidence and support they have extended and shown to PNG in its nomination of Dame Meg Taylor to the position as Secretary to the Forum,” Mr O’Neill said.

“This is the first time in our country that a women leader will lead an international organization as such, and that is the confidence and trust that they have extended to our women leaders in the country.”

He also pointed out that it would also be the first time that the secretariat would be led by three women- the others two deputies being Andie Fong and Cristelle Pratt.

“The Secretariat will be headed for the first time by three women, this is an historic moment for the region,” the PM added.

“Pacific Islands have given us overwhelming support in the confidence of PNG as a country that the rest of the region looks to provide some leadership in regional issues.”

“The new secretary general has got a huge task ahead of her in terms of the implementation of the Pacific Plan Review conducted and concluded recently and accepted by the leaders earlier this year, which aims to strengthen and inform about regional issues on the way they affect our communities.”
