THE International Training Institute (ITI), through the newly
established ITI Center for Advancement of Internet Technologies (ICIT) have
launched what is one of the first internet based publication journal in the
country and the pacific region.
Titled ‘ICIT PNG’, the publication covers internet technologies
and security from the ICIT research based center for advanced internet studies.
ICIT Director Sentheyval Kumaran said that the idea of the
journal was developed in 2011, with the view to create a research institute for
the current graduates from ITI for post graduate research studies.
“The journal will be an avenue where our research students
and staff can publish their research in internet studies and the PNG
perspective of it in the country and the region, and also findings of workshops
and seminars also will be published,” Kumaran said.
“There is nothing else like this in the country and the
journal focuses on informative information for internet users.”
“Since the introduction of the internet on a wider scale
through mobile communication providers in the country- the need for the
technology has been growing tremendously and there is a need to inform users of
the do and don’t of the internets, and the advantages and disadvantages also.”
He said that with a globalised world we are all living in- the
internet was becoming more and more a part of our daily lives through banking,
shopping, and social networking.
“This is the first journal in both the country and the
pacific region, and it will focus on giving valid information to help both our
students and staff and also assist the industry in the country,” he said.
Vice Chairman of ICIT and Editor of the Journal, Cecil
Goldstein, said that the journal will be a mouthpiece for the centre and
community as a source of information, news, and insight.
“When talking about the journal, it is an open invitation for
the community to contribute as the internet has by far brought technology
closer to the community,” Goldstein said.
“Focus on research on internet behavior and how to use the
internets effectively and safely will be key focus areas of the journal.”
“The internet is both
helping and hurting people physically and guidance is important in its usage by
especially the younger generation.”
Despite the first issue being only 8 pages thick, the editor
promised bigger and better issues in the future for the publication every four
months.
Over 200 copies were printed for the first issue and are
available free of charge at ITI.
