MEMBER for
Moresby South Justin Tkatchenko has revealed that the Department of Defence has
purchased 10 high covenant homes for the village of Kirakira in his electorate,
who bore the brunt of a rampage by soldiers over two months ago in June
following the murder of their colleague at the village.
The 10 new
houses will compensate for the 10 homes destroyed by soldier in the aftermath
of the murder taking place.
Mr
Tkatchenko thanked the Defence Department through its Minister Fabian Pok, and
the commander of the military, Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo for their swift
efforts to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the incident.
“I would to thank
the Defense Department through the Minister Dr Fabian Pok and the commander for
the PNG Defence Force for their swift action in purchasing 10 brand new kit
homes for Kirakira village through PNG Forest Products,” Tkatchenko said.
“This
process will take two to three months to fabricate the buildings as well as
construct them so that in the next three or four months we will see those building
completed and erected in Kirakira village.”
“Unfortunately
I would love to have them built immediately but these things take time but we
want to do these things properly so that the houses are constructed to the best
of quality so they last for a long time.”
The MP thanked
the Kirakira people for their patience; despite the fact that the main road was
blocked again whiIe he was attending the Commonwealth games.
“The road
was temporarily blocked again out of misinformation and frustration of our
young men and women from the village,” he said.
“That has
been resolved and I will have another meeting with the committee just to listen
to any other issues that may arise but we are working as fast as we possibly
can to ensure that the houses and infrastructure are built for the benefit of
those people that were victims of the burning down of their houses.”
Mr
Tkatchenko also revealed that the investigation conducted by the police and the
defense force is nearing its completion.
“I have been
assured that we will have some reports back to me, the prime minister, and the
governor by next week (this week),” he added.
“Colonel
Vagi Oala is finalizing the report to ensure that we get the truth from the
defense force’s side.”
“The CID
(Crimes Investigation Division) thanks to Commissioner (Geoffrey) Vaki has
stationed CID Officers in Kirakira village to get all the information from the
villagers and those affected.”
“I’ll be looking forward in the findings in
how this incident eventuated and happened to basically put to end the incident.”
