NATIONAL Capital District Commission presented cheque of K30,000 yesterday for the victims of Cyclone Ita in the Milne Bay province, which struck the provinces islands in April last month.

Presenting the cheque, NCD Governor Powes Parkop said the contribution was on behalf of the city residents and the Milne Bay community who reside in the city.

“Every natural disaster requires a collective approach by all in terms of restoration and rehabilitation efforts,” Parkop said.

“I know it may not be much but I hope if goes a long way in helping the people on the ground.”

Governor for Milne Bay, Titus Philemon, while receiving the cheque pointed out that the Governor for NCD was the first governor in the country to come on board and assist his people, who he said were still affected in the aftermath of the category 4 storm.

“I would like to thank the National Capital District Commission and the governor who has been a strong supporter for the province in terms of its development,” Governor Philemon said.

“It has been a month since the cyclone struck and the people on the ground have been affected in what they describe as one of the worst storms ever to hit the province’s island region.”

Governor Philemon also made special mention of thanks to the media for their efforts to publicize the plight of the islander and also thanked the National Government for its assistance of K6 million towards the affected communities.

He explained that the funds given by NCDC would go to the Provincial Disaster Coordination Unit to assist in the response activities currently underway in the province.

The Governor for Milne Bay also announced that the Milne Community in Port Moresby would host a corporate dinner at the State Function Room at the National Parliament this month, and thanked the Speaker of Parliament Theo Zurenuoc for giving his blessing to use the facility.
